Tuesday, September 1st, 2009: Sea Dogs Alvarez Chosen August's Best in EL
Over the past month Jose Alvarez has turned quite a few heads. He's young, talented and able to pitch with the established arms in the Eastern League. He proved all that and now he's been named August's Pitcher of the Month.

The rookie for the Portland Sea Dogs posted 6-0 mark and a 1.36 ERA. In 6 starts he tossed 46.1 innings, permitted 36 hits and fanned 33 batters.

In 2009 Alvarez has posted a record of 14 wins and 6 losses with a 2.18 ERA. He has appeared in 23 games and struck out 112 in 165 innings.
Thursday, August 13th, 2009: League Punishes Pair for Fighting
Bad blood could be brewing between the Fisher Cats and the Sea Dogs. In yesterday's contest at Ice Hawks Ballpark, New Hampshire's Aaron Mathews and Portland's Felix Doubront caused the benches to empty when they went toe-to-toe against one another. Only Mathews and Doubront were ejected by the umpires.

Upon hearing that the two players had been suspended 4 games each by the league office, harsh comments came from both clubhouses.

League officials have warned both organizations about the consequences of premeditated retaliation.

Mathews is hitting .268 so far this season with 61 RBIs and 43 runs scored. He has 100 hits including 5 home runs, 29 walks and .323 OBP.

This year Doubront has compiled a 8-7 record with a 2.66 ERA.
Tuesday, August 4th, 2009: Connecticut Helpless Against Alvarez
Jose Alvarez of the Portland Sea Dogs gave the Defenders a steady diet of fine pitches and he walked off the mound with a complete-game shutout. He blanked them 12-0 on 3 hits with a total of 13 strikeouts and no walks.

The Portland manager said, "Alvarez was on quite a roll. He gets great late movement and he doesn't give in to the hitters."

In 18 starts this season, Alvarez has recorded 9 wins and absorbed 6 losses. He has pitched 127.2 innings, allowed 114 hits, struck out 92 and has a 2.33 ERA.
